Our community Our concern

The Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society has been in existence for the past 76 years. The Society is the largest Welfare Organisation in Tongaat and is affiliated to Child Welfare South Africa. The Society serves the needs of the underprivileged and their families in the greater Tongaat area, which has a population in excess of one hundred thousand.

This Society has always espoused a developmental approach in accordance with the empowerment of the beneficiaries of our interventions. Our organization plays an intermediary and supportive role with all the informal settlements in Tongaat, linking them to the resources aimed at sustainable development.

The Society is is given direction by the Board of Management, which comprises of volunteers from the community. The members are elected annually at the Society's General Meeting.

The Society undertakes professional services in respect of the following:

  • Adoption
  • Statutory placement of orphans & vulnerable children
  • Family Conflict Marital Discord
  • Child Protection Services.
  • HIV/AIDS counselling and relevant programmes.
  • Social Relief and Poverty Alleviation 

Community Development with emphasis on community empowerment and self-help projects.

For the 2013/2014 financial year our Society saw 3279 clients for case work related services and 3756 interviews were conducted. this excludes school and home visits conducted daily.

The thrust of our work is in the informal settlements. There are approximately 18 such areas that are currently being serviced by Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society. The Society also runs a computer centre, 3 homework centres and a Domestic empowerment programme.

The Society achieved a milestone in its history by acquiring its own building thus bringing it closer to its vision of a “One Stop Welfare Centre”.

In addition, the ravages of the Aids pandemic are placing an increasing number of children in vulnerable situations. Our Society undertakes intensive programmes with special emphasis on the care of children in our communities.

The Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society is a truly community based organization whose history is closely aligned to the liberation struggle against apartheid. The organization served as the training ground for a number of community activists who now hold key positions in government and civil society. Child Welfare organizations like the Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society is an excellent example of government and community partnership in the provision of much needed social welfare services.
